Curator & Coach - Week 9

Game of the Week
Auburn @ LSU

This one was a no-brainer for me. This is one of the best rivalries in the South. And it’s not just the action on the field. There’s the 1988 “Earthquake Game,” the 1996 “Barn Burner,” the 1999 cigar controversy, it’s always something with these two.

On the field we’re gonna see a duel between LSU’s star QB Joe Burrow and Auburn’s promising freshman Bo Nix. Burrow would normally have the advantage here but Nix was learning of the LSU-Auburn tradition nine months before he was born. His dad, former Auburn QB Patrick Nix had his own chapter of this story.

Its such a great game and im excited to see it every year. Both of these teams are tough and having good seasons. In the end, I’ll have to give the edge to the Tigers...the LSU Tigers, that is.

Upset Alert
Wisconsin @ Ohio State

The Badgers ride into Columbus with a chip on their shoulder. That loss to Illinois still stings a little. The best way to fix that would be to smack the Buckeyes in the mouth on their home turf. The whole world is singing the praises of Justin Fields and the Buckeyes. They’re undefeated, yet untested. They’ve skated past some substandard teams and even got past Sparty. But the Badgers are big, and physical, and mean. And, most of all, no one thinks they can pull this one off. But they can and they will.

GAME OF THE WEEK
AUBURN @ LSU

Top 10 clash in Death Valley! Bo Nix has looked like a seasoned vet most of the season. He has not been rattled in critical situations. He hasn’t appeared shaken. No moment has been too big for him. However, he hasn’t been to Death Valley. 100,000 + Cajuns all fired up for a top 10 showdown tends to lead to a bit of a hostile environment. I don’t know that he will crumble or anything to such an extreme, but it does make it tough to operate your offense. This is, in my opinion, the best Auburn team since the Newton National Title team. On the flip side, this may be the best LSU team EVER. These guys are for real. The defense is tough. The offense is EXPLOSIVE. I think the Bayou Bengals are just too much right now and I think they’ll take this one in a highly competitive game.

UPSET ALERT
WASHINGTON ST. @ OREGON

Oregon is on a roll this season following a great showing in an opening week loss to Auburn. They’re explosive and they’re even playing a little defense in Eugene. Justin Herbert is living a childhood dream putting up mega numbers while leading his hometown Ducks to 6 consecutive W’s. The Ducks are not a fluke. They are absolutely, 100% real…BUT, they might have just found someone capable of shooting it out with them. The Pirate has gotten his Cougars playing up to his lofty offensive standard. There’s a new Wide Receiver U and I believe they will drag this thing into the 4th quarter of a shootout in the truest sense of the word. I don’t expect much from the defenses here. Whoever has the ball last wins. Go Cougs!

Curator & Coach - Week 8

Game of the Week
Michigan @ Penn State

The Nittany Lions are having s banner year so far. The one thing holding them back from the Top 5 is schedule. Last week they pulled out a big win against a good Iowa program. A solid win against Michigan will get some attention.

The Wolverines come to Happy Valley with their backs against the wall. They need to win out in order to have a shot at the Playoff. The rest of their schedule will make that tough. They have to be focused on Penn State and they need to have their best game to date. Can they do that?

Upset Alert
Arizona State @ Utah

Hold up! No one seems to be giving ol’ Herm Edwards any love. The Sun Devils are one score from being undefeated. They’ve Sparty, they’ve beat Cal, they've beat Washington State. They haven’t run the scores up, they’ve just taken care of business.

The Utes come in with a nice record and also a win over Washington State. There’s also an L they were handed by a bad Southern Cal team. They are two touchdown favorites? I don’t think so.

Watch out for Herm and his boys this weekend.
Coach Drew Burnham

GAME OF THE WEEK
ARIZONA ST @ UTAH
The fate of the Pac 12 making their first ever College Football Playoff appearance is hanging in the balance. With only 3 teams remaining with a shot, every game involving a contender matters. This game involves 2. Herm Edwards has brought a pro football approach to the Sun Devils and, after a year, it is starting to take hold. They have looked strong this year and could use a big - time statement win to legitimize themselves as a true contender. While we’re talking about teams who need a statement win, Utah’s most impressive win this year is over Washington State. I love Mike Leech more than most, but that hardly cements you as a Playoff contender on its own. This game will do a lot to decide the Pac 12 and in brutal honesty, the winner may only have 1 true hurdle left after this week.

UPSET ALERT
BAYLOR @ OKLAHOMA STATE
Baylor is flying high at 6-0 with exactly 0 wins that make you raise your eyebrows. They are going into Stillwater which is home to one of the highest-flying offenses in America when it’s clicking. Oklahoma St. has GOT to find some consistency to get this done. They’ve got to get stops and finish drives. All the comforts of home should make that task a little easier. Alsosomething to keep in mind: while he may struggle from time to time in some games that everyone thinks are no brainers, The Mullet has a knack for winning games that many think to be upsets. Money Mike and the boys will get this one done.

In this week’s poll Alabama maintains their top spot. Clemson now stands alone at #2 as Georgia falls to #8. We say goodbye to Florida who drops out of the rankings after their loss in Baton Rouge. We’d like to welcome Boise State, who has received votes for the last several weeks and finally broke into the poll this week.

Curator & Coach - Week 7

Game of the Week
Florida @ LSU

This one gets my attention every year. Florida and Louisiana both hold special places in my heart but this is more about football than anything else. This is usually a very good game. These are two very good football teams.

The Tigers have looked strong all year and now have an opportunity to prove themselves against a Top 10 opponent.

The Gators are coming off a statement game. Their victory over Auburn last week was evidence that they are serious this season. Now they walk into the Valley.

Baton Rouge. At night.

Son of a gun, gonna have big fun on the bayou!

Upset Alert
Texas vs Oklahoma at the Texas State Fair

Two teams who chronically struggle with a monkey on their back. “Is Texas Back?” vs “Chokelahoma.” This one is all over the board. Both teams have a history of underperforming in big games. Both have a history of showing up big in big games. It all depends on which Oklahoma and which Texas teams show up. And this is an unpredictable rivalry Olin it’s own right. I think Texas is looking strong this year and this is their chance to take this season to the next level. lol for them to show up big in Dallas.
Coach Drew Burnham

GAME OF THE WEEK

PENN STATE @ IOWA
There is legitimate depth in the Big 10 this year with 4 teams legitimately still in the playoff hunt at nearly the halfway point of the season. These are 2 of those teams. Iowa in in must-win mode to stay alive but there is no situation too big for the nation’s longest tenured coach in Kirk Ferentz. The reconstruction James Franklin has performed at Penn State is nothing short of amazing. They are clicking on all cylinders and seem to be primed for a run. There will be a raucous Hawkeye crowd and while I don’t think it’ll be enough, I am excited to see how this one goes.

UPSET ALERT
TEXAS TECH @ BAYLOR
Baylor is off to a hot start at 5-0 as they rebuild from a tough time for their program. They’ve got the legs back under them now and they have looked tremendously explosive. They have also added one key component that has always been a large liability for them: DEFENSE. The Bears are only allowing 15 points a game thus far and that is what has kept their ship afloat.I quote the great philosopher Lee Corso when I say, “but not so fast my friend!”. Texas Tech is going to show up and put their foot on the gas pedal and not take it off until they’re back in Lubbock. This offense is at a different level and Baylor’s defense is going to be put to the ultimate test. Can they get enough stops to hold on to a win? We shall see…

Curator & Coach - Week 6

Game of the Week
Michigan State @ Ohio State
We’re hearing a lot of hype about Justin Fields. The sophomore transferred to the Buckeyes after he felt he didn’t get enough attention in Athens. He’s put up some serious stats in Columbus: 81 completions on 116 attempts for 1092 and 16 touchdowns. That’s quite impressive if you don’t look at strength of schedule.

My old friend Sparty coming to town we’ll see how Fields does against a serious program. The Spartans have a way of playing up to the competition. They show out in the big games. They will be prepared coming into Columbus and they'll be hingry, looking for a chance to prove themselves against a favored Buckeye program,

Upset Alert
Iowa at Michigan

Michigan is favored in this one and I’m not exactly sure why. Iowa has been impressive this season with their only difficulty being a crazy rivalry game that was harassed by weather throughout. Michigan gave up 21 points to Middle Tennessee and Army before being slapped cross-eyed by Wisconsin. Sure, they dropped the hammer on Rutgers last week but this is a team that just isn’t living up to the hype. The Wolverines have not performed well against ranked opponents under Harbaugh.

The Hawkeyes, on the other hand, look good this year. They have the ability to score and they're playing some tough defense.

Watch for Iowa to stoke the fires of discontent underneath Jim Harbaugh’s seat. Hawkeyes roll.
Coach Drew Burnham

GAME OF THE WEEK

AUBURN @ FLORIDA
Crossover games in the SEC are like the roulette wheel. More times than not 1 team is really good and the other is down and it leads to an anticlimactic end. However, every once in a while, that ball lands in the right slot and not only does it lead to tons of hype and celebration, but it keeps us at the table searching for the next one. This one is legit. We’ve hit our number. Behind the day to day leadership of new Offensive Coordinator Ken Dillingham (of Memphis fame), the Auburn offense has returned to the top of the national conversation. They live and die on the mistakes of a (talented) freshman QB, but the kid has so many weapons surrounding him that he can often get himself out of tough spots. On the other end, Dan Mullen’s return to Gainesville has proven to be triumphant to this point. The excitement of the late 2000’s Gator teams has returned. This one is going to live up to the hype but I believe the legend of Bo Nix grows just a little bigger after a big play late Saturday to win it.

UPSET ALERT
TEXAS @ WEST VIRGINIA
They’re striping the stadium in Blue and Gold in Morgantown this weekend to welcome a big-time opponent in the Texas Longhorns. The Mountaineers have picked up right where Dana Holgersen left off with new coach Neal Brown. The work he did at Troy, much to the dismay of the curator, is the stuff of legend. They won conference championships, took down LSU in Death Valley and generally won way more games than anyone thought they were supposed to. He’s brought the all gas no brakes culture to West Virginia and all signs show them as a program on the rise. I do not think they are a better team than Texas. However, I do know that fan base and I know that stadium will be ELECTRIC Saturday afternoon. It’ll be quite the environment and I believe a little bit of Longhorn over confidence will go a long way. Keep an eye on this one.
