Game of the Week - Curator Sam Burnham
Texas A&M vs Arkansas

I’ve seen more than one person publicly eating crow regarding their skepticism and criticism of Arkansas hiring Sam Pittman as their head coach. I don’t understand why he was so underestimated as a coaching hire. He’s a well seasoned coach, he has a varied experience, he’s a proven recruiter, and he has spent much of his career coaching hogs. I make no apologies for being partial to the offensive line. It is by far the most important role on the field. That offensive line mentality likely helps fuel Pittman’s success. Close your mouth, do your job. If you fall down, get up and do it all again.

Now the Razorbacks play host to former SWC rival Texas A&M. The Aggies are a formidable foe and the history is rich. Admittedly I do not have near the admiration for Jimbo Fisher as I have for Pittman but he’s a top tier coach who will bring a well-prepared team into this game.

Arkansas has yet to beat A&M since the latter joined the SEC in 2012. That’s nine straight losses for those keeping score at home. But Arkansas has already seen a marked improvement since Pittman’s arrival. Any success at all would be commendable, considering their schedule. But the Razorbacks showed us all just what they can do when they sent the Texas Longhorns back to Austin with their tails between their legs.

These are two good football teams. I expect more fight out of the Aggies than we saw from the Horns. But I still expect the Hawgs to come out on top.
Game of the Week - Coach Drew Burnham
Notre Dame vs Wisconsin

This game is a statement opportunity for both teams. Notre Dame looks to solidify themselves as a playoff contender following 3 consecutive attention drawing performances that have seen them escape with 3 wins, albeit by a modest 20 total points. Florida State, Toldeo and Purdue have all taken their best shot at an Irish team whose schedule is about to stop doing them favors. They’re looking down the barrel of a very talented and well coached Wisconsin team followed by a visit from Group of 5 juggernaut Cincinnati and a night game in Blacksburg, VA. That’s no easy slate and if the Irish are to survive this stretch, it all begins in Chicago on Saturday.

Wisconsin is in pure survival mode. They’re not out of the playoff hunt, but they certainly have to win out to make it and, in their position, a statement win against a playoff veteran would go a long way in the eyes of the committee. With all those chips on the table this one will be a heck of a lot of fun.

There are a couple angles to this one. First, and psychologically most difficult, Notre Dame QB Jack Coan will stand opposite his former team donning the gold and blue. I have played against a former program of mine 3 times in my career and it’s weird every time. He will be saved SOME stress with the game being in Chicago and not in Camp Randall. I’ve done it both ways and it’s definitely easier when it’s not a true road game. You try to prepare yourself and you try to think through everything as much as possible to not be caught off guard on game day, but it gets you. It wins every time. We’re professionals and we do our jobs, but something always just feels a little off about it. How Coan handles that test will go a long way in determining the Irish’s offensive success.

Apart from Jack’s psych battle, there is the normal chess game that will take place. Jack Coan and Irish Offensive Coordinator Tommy Rees face off against Preseason All Big 10 LB Jack Sanborn and Jim Leonhard, Defensive Coordinator for the Badgers. The Wisconsin Offense sputtered against Penn State scoring just 10 points while turning the ball over 3 times. The Badgers need to keep Notre Dame’s strong offense in check and keep the score low into the 4th if they are to find a way to win this one. Leonhard is one of the best in the business, likely my favorite defensive coach in the country right now. He’s sharp and he will have a few looks up his sleeve to attack the Irish and keep Rees and Coan on their toes. That’s where this game will be won.

Gut Check Time for Clemson

Clemson sandwiched a cupcake between a tough loss to Georgia and a near loss to Georgia Tech. They’ve shown a few flashes of greatness, mostly in their defensive efforts against Georgia. But this team is underperforming. This is not the Clemson team we’ve come to know. They’re riding into Raleigh to face a Wolfpack team they should beat. But State is dangerous. If Clemson comes out flat or looks past State, they’re going to lose. If they hope to salvage their season, they need to get this game right. It’s gut check time for Clemson. Let’s see how they respond.

Southwest Conference Flashbacks

Speaking of chips on the table, the wild
wild Southwest is back this weekend! 3 games featuring 6 of the final 9 Southwest Conference teams are on the docket for the weekend. With the new name, image and likeness rule being passed this year, those nostalgic matchups make me wonder what could have been in that conference if this law was pushed through 40 years ago. SMU at TCU, Texas Tech at Texas and Texas A&M vs Arkansas are all on the menu Saturday. What a wild time that was full of unbelievable football. Long time fans of the game should enjoy seeing those this weekend. Kind of makes me excited. Almost excited enough to go buy recruits Trans Am’s in hopes that they’ll commit to my program instead of the one down the road…but I don’t…. because that’s still illegal and will get your program shut down. Bummer. Enjoy the weekend!

Curator Sam Burnham - Game of the Week
Auburn @ Penn State

This week y’all are getting a double dose of this game. Looking over this week’s schedule, perhaps Auburn and Penn State deserve an award for not playing a cupcake game in Week 3. With both of us picking it, this is the game of the week.

The Tigers come into Happy Valley facing a “White-Out.” That is going to create a bit of a hostile environment for Auburn to deal with.

The Tigers have looked strong but they’re still wiping cupcake frosting off their mouths. This is really their first test of the season

The Nittany Lions picked up a quality win in Week 1 at Wisconsin. During that game penn State gained only 43 yards and one first down in the entire first half. They won despite Wisconsin controlling the ball for 42 minutes. It was only James Franklin’s second road victory against a ranked opponent. This leaves me wondering if it says more about Penn State or the Badgers.

Auburn’s SEC experience will help them in the White-Out. For a team accustomed to Tiger Stadium, Bryant-Denny, Sanford, Neyland, Ben Hill Griffin, a hostile environment is just known as “Saturday.” I’m curious to see what Bo Nix can really do. This is a great opportunity for that.
Coach Drew Burnham - Game of the Week
Auburn @ Penn State

Often times we are forced to wait until December for these types of big name, intersectional matchups. With strength of schedule becoming a more vital piece of the playoff picture, we will begin to see more of these and it will only become more prevalent when the playoff eventually expands. There are few scenes in college football more eye popping than the white out at Penn State. It ranks high on my list of the traditions that make this the greatest sport in this country. The atmosphere is going to be off the charts electric. These teams both need this win in a bad way considering a 2-loss team is almost certainly out of the race, Penn State still has to play Ohio State and Auburn still has both Bama and Georgia remaining. A loss here reeks of the Gator Bowl for someone.
Auburn has been the definition of explosive in their 2 outings having handled 2 inferior opponents exactly as they should. They have scored at will and played stellar defense. They look to be firing on all cylinders on the field. One thing they haven’t been this season is Battle Tested. Penn State is walking tall after a big-time quality win at Wisconsin in an extremely hostile environment. They’ve been in the arena already. They’ve played in the 4th quarter. They have felt the ball in their hands with the game on the line. You can’t replicate that and you can’t practice it. Bring them home with 100,000+ of their closest friends creating the most tumultuous September blizzard you’ve ever seen for 3 hours with their battle scars and you make them extremely difficult to beat. I think the mental battle that will happen in Saturday night is a fight that the Tigers just aren’t quite enough for YET. These are the games that Coach Harsinwill have his team looking forward to soon, but not yet. War Lions.
Curator Sam Burnham - Upset Alert
Fresno State @ UCLA

Again, the pickings are slim this week. But one game caught my eye. The Coach hypes up Fresno State and with good reason. They nearly pulled off the upset he called at Oregon. Turnovers likely cost them that game.

The Bulldogs have a relentless offense. They’re averaging 479.3 yards and 32.8 points per game. This is a team looking to make a statement. Beating UCLA would do just that. Fresno head coach Kalen DeBoer is a name you hear the Coach drop a lot. He’s an up and coming leader you’re going to hear more and more about in the years to come. Under previous leadership, Fresno has won the last three meetings against UCLA and DeBoer has already made his transition almost seamless. Why should the UCLA series be any different?

The Bruins have had an extra week to ponder their impressive win over LSU. How they handle that success will have an impact on today’s game. UCLA has to be mentally and emotionally prepared. Last game has to be ancient history and Fresno can be their only focus. Distractions and overconfidence will both be disastrous Saturday.

If the Bruins come into this game with swollen egos and Fresno limits their turnovers, the Bulldogs will, I stress WILL, win this ball game. Those are the two factors today. UCLA needs to be mentally tough and focused on the opponent at hand. Fresno needs to hold onto the football. If both of these things happen, expect an excellent game
Coach Drew Burnham - Upset Alert
Alabama @ Florida

t has been 657 Days since the Alabama Crimson Tide lost a football game. It has been 2,190 days since they lost to anyone besides Auburn or the National Champion that season. That was September of 2015. SIX YEARS. I will never doubt coach Saban’s ability to prepare his team for a big game. I will never doubt coach Saban’s ability to do just about anything. However, mathematically, scientifically, at some point, you’re going to lose a football game. It’s going to happen. You have a tough opponent on the road; an opponent that isn’t SO tough that you feel like your backs against the wall and the pressure makes you elevate your game, but definitely good enough to beat you. You’re in a place where the fan base longs for a home quality win desperately to announce themselves as “back”. I don’t think that the Tide will be unprepared, caught off guard or not able to preform in the moment, I just think their clock has to run out sometime and I believe that Florida has enough fire power right now to be the ones to do it. Simple as that. Additionally, Dan Mullen is one of approximately 3 FBS Head coaches right now that aren’t a previous Saban assistant (He’s an Urban Meyer guy) so we don’t have to worry about that old pesky curse that will one day be broken by Lane Kiffin. Chomp Chomp.

Curator & Coach - Week 2

Curator's Game of the Week
Texas @ Arkansas

This week we're going back to the old Southwest Conference days. This was a major game every year back then. These two usually had to fight it out with A&M trying to get a Cotton Bowl bid. Texas leads the all-time series 56-22. The two teams have not met in 17 years and the last time this game was played in Fayetteville was 1989.

With that sort of history behind it, this rivalry certainly lives on. With Texas making plans to move to the SEC, this game takes on new meaning.

For my analysis here I have to look at the amazing job Sam Pittman has done with the Razorback program. 4-7 isn't a great statistic but if you look at the opponents and the margins, he has done something quite impressive.

Speaking of rebuilding, a rebuilt Steve Sarkisian had a great opening week with the Longhorn program he has been charged with rebuilding. After a tight start, the Longhorns ran away from an upstart Louisiana program. You an bet Sarkisian will have his team ready for a similar performance this week.

While the Razorbacks had some sloppy moments in their opener, Pittman has no doubt spent time this week working out the bugs that he found in the film. It is also a safe bet that he has posted on the bulletin board the article in which Steve Sarkisian referred to the Razorbacks as "just another faceless opponent."

Pittman, on the other hand has admitted that Texas is the Hawgs' biggest rival. I have no doubt that Arkansas fans feel that way and the sell-out crowd will make that feeling evident to Sarkisian and the Longhorns. I expect a hostile environment, twp well-prepared teams, some volatile moments, and a great football game.
Coach's Game of the Week:
Iowa @ Iowa State

This may come as a shock, but to me, the beauty of this rivalry this year lies in the coaching matchup.

Iowa State ended the 2020 season as one of the hottest teams in the country. 8-3 with losses to top 10 Oklahoma State and a Big 12 Championship Game loss to Oklahoma after beating them earlier in the year. I’m a coach, not a journalist. I don’t have to pretend to be unbiased. I have followed Campbell since he was pumping out 9 win seasons at Toledo on Wednesday night MACtion. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet him a few times and he has always been very gracious, open and personable. The guy gets it. He sees the bigger picture. He wins the long way and when guys leave his program, they are better prepared for the world that awaits them. Seeing him continue to have success in places that aren’t traditional football hotbeds fires me up.

On the other sideline will be Kirk Ferentz, the longest tenured coach in FBS football. He arrived at the University of Iowa in 1999. For those of you that would like to feel old, that’s before 3 classes of current Hawkeyes were born. He has never been one for flash. You don’t hear much national media coverage about him or his program. They always seem to be in the background, but if you look at the Top 25 polls, the Hawkeyes are always there. Ferentz is one of the last of his kind clinging to a game that is changing and he is still winning!
The Hawkeyes appeared to be in mid-season form in week 1 during a 34-6 pounding of a very good and well-coached Indiana team. Iowa had NO turnovers and NO substitution or procedure penalties and held Indiana to 6 points. As a coach, that in itself is a huge win for week 1. Iowa State struggled out of the gate sliding by FCS Northern Iowa 16-10. I attribute their struggles to many things, none of which involve them not being a good football team. It’s old vs new in this classic CFB rivalry and I can’t wait to see it!
Curator's Game of Interest
North Carolina State @ Mississippi State

These two teams aren't going to be in the running for the CFB Playoff, barring some unforeseen circumstances. They'll both likely be bowl eligible and give their fans some fun wins.

What intrigues me about this game is the perfomance of the Wolfpack defense and the Bulldog offense last week.

The Pack slammed the door on South Florida. The Bulls are no power but the stats are still impressive. The Bulls only managed 167 passing yards and 104 rushing yards while coming up with 0 after two trips t the red zone.

The Bulldogs pulled off a win against Louisiana Tech despite facing a 20-point 4th quarter deficit.

This game will come down to a stingy defense and that crazy flying circus known as the Air Raid offense. If the boys from Raleigh can keep up with the Air Raid on a sweaty Mississippi evening, this could be a fun one to watch.

With most of the big names eating cupcakes this week, this is one to watch.
Coach's Game of Interest:
Jacksonville
State @ Florida State

I’m not officially putting anyone on upset alert this week. I don’t think the ‘Noles will have trouble with this one. However, there’s some interesting history to take in with this matchup. Florida State leads the all time series 2-1 with Jacksonville State’s win coming all the way back in 1947 by a score of 7-0. The two crossed paths again in week 2 of 2009 (I may have had a specific vested interest in this one) in a blinding rain storm of biblical proportions. Jacksonville state held a 9-6 lead before allowing a Seminole touchdown with just 36 seconds remaining in the game and a fumble recovery for another touchdown in their final drive to ultimately lose 19-9. What a game it was! Then, just last fall,
Jacksonville state loses a halftime lead, giving up 20 points in a 3rd quarter surge and a coffin nail touchdown in the last 2 minutes of the game to ultimately lose by 17; another close contest. History says that the Gamecocks just have a way of keeping it interesting in Tallahassee. Florida State has come so far under Mike Norvel and his offense led by a couple great friends of mine. I don’t think they will struggle with this one, I don’t expect it to be very close even but history is funny and we have to pay attention to it.

Curator & Coach - Week 1

College football is back and so is Curator & Coach. C&C is ABG’s look at this week’s games with commentary from ABG Curator Sam Burnham and ABG College Football Analyst Coach Drew Burnham.
Week 1 Upset Alert - Curator Sam Burnham
Louisiana @ Texas

How many years have they been telling us that “Texas is back?” How many times has that prediction been wrong? So what we ha e at work in this matchup are two intangibles. In Austin, we have the Mac Brown Curse. The Longhorns ran off their highly successful coach and he’s at North Carolina (yes, the basketball school) wowing every critic he has ever had. Meanwhile Texas is literally pumping money out of the ground trying to get coaches, recruits, whatever, trying to get back where Brown took them. Steve Sarkisian comes in with the promise to reverse the Texas trend of mediocrity but he's definitely not the first. Even if he is ultimately successful, it will take time to put his systemi in place and get the players he needs to make it work.

In Lafayette, Billy Napier has built a proven winner. The Cajuns don't get the attention that they have recently earned because they are not "one of the big guys." But Napier's system is in place, he's working with his players, his machine is already running. The intangible in play here is that there are a lot of Ragin’ Cajun fans recovering from Hurricane Ida who could really use some good news right now. The cajuns are off to represent their friends and family who are suffering. Their 9 point underdogs pulling off a win in Austin is just what the doctor ordered. Emotion and love are major motivators. Look for special things to happen for the guys in red.
Week 1 Upset Alert - Coach Drew Burnham
Oregon vs Fresno State

Long time readers of this segment will remember in 2019 when crazy ole Coach said to keep
an eye on Indiana because they had hired a special coach and they were going to be on the map soon. People told me I was crazy. People in the coaching business, people that are experts in the field, told me I was crazy. Fast forward to 2021 and Indiana is ranked in the preseason poll and fresh off a 2020 season that saw them go 6-1 in the regular season with their lone loss coming by a single score to National Runner-up Ohio State. “Coach, you’re picking Fresno and Oregon. What does Indiana have to do with this?” I’m glad you asked. Remember that special coach that Indiana had hired to direct their offense? His name is Kalen DeBoer and he’s in the Captain’s seat in the Valley now.
His 95% career win percentage took a hit in 2020 and he now finally has more career losses than National Title rings, but Coach DeBoer is gearing up to take the college football world by storm and this will be his grand coming out party. It’s nothing to do with Oregon, I’m on full “Fresno vs. the world” mode right now and I’m not counting them out of anything less than “We want BAMA”. In their opener against UCONN, QB Jake Haener went 20-26 for 331 yards and 3TD’s in 3 quarters. 11 Bulldog receivers touched the ball and 6 different players recorded a carry. The ability to spread the ball around that much makes an offense extremely difficult to contain, even when you have the superior athletes.
Also, bear in mind that Fresno has the benefit of having already played a game this fall. Oregon is walking into their season opener off a 3-2 regular season which somehow saw them still win the PAC12 championship before losing the Fiesta Bowl. Fresno hasn’t quite made enough noise yet to draw attention and I think Oregon might have out kicked their coverage in this preseason poll. I don’t think they have that much gas in their tank and I’ll ride with Fresno until they give me a reason not to. Keep and eye on this one.
Game to Watch - Curator Sam Burnham
Georgia vs Clemson

It should be a crime for these two teams to not play each other every year. The two stadiums sit 76 miles apart. Clemson’s last loss in a season opener? Georgia. Georgia’s last loss in a season opener? Clemson.

Georgia has turned the reins over to J.T. Daniel. The talented QB had a strong showing after arriving in Athens and spending the first few weeks on the sidelines learning the system. This year he has inspired huge expectations from the Dawg faithful.

Clemson it looking to reload after losing Trevor Lawrence to the NFL Draft. D.J. Uiagalelei started two games for Clemson last season and put up some impressive numbers. He’ll be up to the task

The proximity of the schools, a common history, and two teams with national championship aspirations make this one the game of the week. It’s early in the season to be so bold but this game might prove to be a de facto playoff game.
Game to Watch - Coach Drew Burnham
Penn State @ Wisconsin

Rarely do we get a game with true Playoff implications in week 1. Both of these teams will roll through the rest of the BIG however many with the Buckeyes waiting in the wings. Outside of a major upset (see Indiana), they both only really have to pass 2 challenges
in their season. An Undefeated or 1 loss BIG 10 champ will almost undoubtedly make the playoff 4. Pass this test and only Ohio State stands between you and New Years Day. Penn State has been established under James Franklin and has done good things but can’t seem to get over the hump and has seemingly plateaued. Wisconsin is a program on the rise who has had a top 5 defense the last 3 seasons in a row. Defensive Coordinator Jim Leonhard turned down multiple NFL opportunities over the offseason and has publicly attributed that decision to his desire and belief that the Badgers are on the door step of a championship run. This one will be exciting, but give me the Badgers!
