Curator & Coach - Rivalry Week

3 Games to Watch
Ohio State @ Michigan

This is a big one every year. It’s one of those nasty rivalries that the fans mark on the calendar years in advance. The animosity runs so high that former Buckeye coach Woody Hayes wouldn’t even say “Michigan” opting to refer to them as “that school up north.” I suppose it’s counterproductive to point out that their both up north.

Anyway.

This will be the biggest challenge firvtge Buckeyes so far. Even last week’s ranked opponent was a suspect Penn State team. The Wolverines staggered at the start of the season but they are rolling now. Something lit a fire under that team. In their last four games they’ve out scored their opponents 166-45, including wins over Notre Dame, Sparty, and Indiana. Throw in the rivalry component, The Big House, and the chance to spoil The Buckeyes’ season and Michigan has a lot to play for. This one promises to be a fight that could derail Ohio State’s playoff hopes.

Alabama @ Auburn
Another huge rivalry that divides towns, neighborhoods, families. The Iron Bowl is something you cannot appreciate until you’ve lived in Alabama.

Bama was a big favorite a few weeks ago. That was before a hip injury ended Tua Tagovailoa’s season. With no quality wins, an offense built on Tua, and without their perennial trademark defense, it’s likely that Bama’s playoff run dies on the plains this Saturday.

Bo Nix and the Tigers have been a juggernaut at home this season. Their friendly confines have been exactly that. Bama has their hands full in Auburn this weekend.

Oklahoma @ Oklahoma State
There's more than a rivalry at stake in Stillwater. The Sooners have a chance to sneak in the back door of the playoff. A win this weekend and a little help could get them in that four team group. Nothing would please the Pokes more than playing spoiler and slamming that back door on their in-state rivals.

The Cowboys have won 4 in a row and Rivalry Week is made for spoilers. Expect a lot of points, some big plays, and perhaps an upset. Mike Gundy will have his team ready. But the Sooners will be too.

Upset Alert
Alabama @ Auburn

I’m not trying to sound like a broken record here but this is going to be n experience, not just a game. Auburn is a 3.5 point dog coming into this one. I’ve never been one to tie the fate of a team to just one player but this time I just can’t help it. Bama has built their offense on Tua Tagovailoa. The quick turnarounds and high points have shifted the Tide’s defensive scheme and it’s not designed to stand on its own as it has historically. It needs that offense that isn’t quite as potent as it was a few weeks ago.

On the plains this year Auburn has been almost perfect. Freshman Bo Nix has been stellar at Jordan-Hare. A stingy defense and a powerful running attack will be a lot for a handicapped Tide to handle. I don’t see how Bama can win the Iron Bowl.

3 GAMES TO WATCH
CINCINNATTI @ MEMPHIS
For the first time since 2016, The Golden Knights will not appear in the American Conference Championship game. Cincy has already secured their place in the game, but there are many questions left unanswered regarding the champion of the “Power 6” league this year. Memphis must beat Cincinnati Saturday to earn the right to move into the championship game and play…. well, Cincinnati again. If the Tigers can win, not only will they be in, but they will host the game in the Liberty Bowl. Should the Bearcats get the best of them, they will host the game against the Naval Academy. The Tigers would be in the game for the 3rdyear in a row having lost the pervious 2 in instant classics. Winning it this year will require them to successfully performprobably the tallest ask in all of sports: beat a good team twice in 2 weeks. Memphis must pull out all the stops while Cincy can afford to sit back a little and use separate games to set up game-changing plays for themselves. It’s a 2-week chess match. Everyone knows what a fan I am of Mike Norvel and his staff, but that’s quite a predicament. I believe the Tigers win this one. We’ll talk later about that championship game.

WASHINGTON ST @ WASHINGTON
For an extended period of time this rivalry didn’t carry much weight because both of these programs were struggling. That time is over. Washington is down a little compared to where they have been in recent years, but 4 of their 5 losses came by 6 points or less. 3 of them were against ranked teams. Chris Petersen has done a phenomenal job rejuvenating this program and I know he will have his boys ready to play. Now, let us move on to the best interviewee in the history of sports. The Cougar offense is averaging 533+ yards per game and just over 41 points. Explosiveness is the name of the game. Defense is NOT the name of the game as they give up just over 430 yards per game and 31 points. In the grand scheme of things, this game doesn’t mean much. No one is putting themselves in position to win the conference and both are already bowl eligible. What excites me about this game is the fireworks! It’s going to be a track meet. The last team with the ball might just win. Get after it Leech.

OKLAHOMA @ OKLAHOMA ST.
Bedlam! Minus one little slip, Oklahoma has looked powerful and dominant. I love Jalen Hurts and his story. He has fallen right into Oklahoma Quarterback place accounting for nearly 4500 yards of offense and 47 touchdowns through 11 games. I believe they are a playoff quality team and with the mayhem that this year is turning into, they might just be the first 2 loss team in playoff history. Keep an eye on that. You may be asking “coach, why pick this game?”. Oklahoma has a spot in the title game locked up and State can’t improve their position with a win. However, Mike Gundy has this amazing knack for beating teams he isn’t supposed to. With that knack comes another, one where he loses to a lot of teams he shouldn’t… but we’ll leave that part for another day. Bedlam. Night game. Jalen Hurts. Chubba Hubbard. No defense allowed. This one is going to be fun. For the poll committee’s sanity’s sake, I hope State can pull the upset.

UPSET ALERT
NOTRE DAME @ STANFORD
Consider this as my official surrender of my Homer Card. Enjoy it while it lasts because this won’t happen often. This one may seem like a reach to many but let’s look at the history of this matchup. Notre Dame makes a trip to California every year, whether it is to play USC or Stanford. It serves to get in front of West Coast recruits and to appease their West Coast fan base. Here’s the stat that may lead you to go back and check my work. Notre Dame has lost the last 5 matchups in a row at Stanford. That streak dates back to 2007. Notre Dame’s Freshmen were 6 years old the last time the Irish won in Palo Alto. I don’t know what it is or what causes it, they just do not play well in that underwhelming environment. For my personal mental state, I hope I am wrong. However, looking at history makes me feel uneasy about this one. Look for the curse of David Shaw to continue here.

Curator & Coach - Week 13

11/23/2019

Coach Drew Burnham is on assignment this week. Game picks will return next week.
Curator Sam Burnham

Game of the Week:
Penn State @ Ohio State

Thus one should be an easy choice. It should be a no-brainer. But the truth is that I shopped around before deciding this one. This is just not a great week for games. And even with Ohio State being overrated and prancing through a schedule of daisies and petunias, two facts stand out about this game. 1) The Buckeyes are a good football team. & 2) Penn State is not an elite program.

Ohio State’s offense is going to fly all over the field with no serious interference. Penn State will score, but not nearly enough and TV commentators will discuss what went wrong.

This is the best matchup of the week but don’t expect too much from it.

Upset Alert
Illinois @ Iowa

i feel odd picking both of these games from the Big Ten. But the SEC & ACC matchups this week should be sponsored by Hostess Cupcakes. Just pitiful.

Iowa is coming off a big big win over Minnesota and should have momentum. With an unranked Illinois team coming to town, this will be an easy week to underperform. Illinois has won four in a row including wins over Sparty and Wisconsin. The Illini have real momentum and will take advantage of it and stun the Hawkeyes before dismantling Northwestern to finish 8-4 and land in a respectable bowl game.
Coach Drew Burnham

GAME OF THE WEEK

PITT @ VIRGINIA TECH
This little matchup has flown under the radar with Penn St and Ohio St getting all the hype for the week. These 2 are currently tied for 2nd in the Coastal Division and Tech will play Virginia next week who sits in 1st place. In my opinion, this is the Coastal division Championship game (because Tech just doesn’t really lose to UVA.) There’s plenty of “football reasons” why this game matters, but if you know this coach you know he’s a sucker for a good storyline. Saturday’s matchup will be Coach Bud Foster’s final home game in Lane Stadium. Coach Foster is an anomaly in our business. He graduated from Murray State (Go Racers!) in 1980 after playing there for Coach Frank Beamer and mover into a graduate assistant role. He was promoted to a full time role there and followed coach Beamer to Virginia Tech in 1987. That’s it. That’s the job experience. No bouncing around. No clout hunting. No ball chasing. The man has been in Blacksburg, VA for 32 years. Coaches are hard pressed to stay in one place for 32 months. It’s absolutely unheard of in our business. He is a personification of loyalty, one of the supposed make-or-break qualities in this profession. His stint wasn’t caused by lack of opportunity to leave. Countless head coaching opportunities have come to him and all have been returned to the sender. He’s at home in Blacksburg. On top of all of that, he is a LEGEND. 11 times he has lead a top 10 national total defense, twice #1. 13 times he has lead a top 10 scoring defense, also twice #1. In 2006 he was awarded the Broyles award as the top assistant coach in the country and in all the other years the committee was kidding themselves. One last run out of that tunnel to Enter Sandman will certainly be an emotional one for many. Ill be cheering hard for the Hokies Saturday and you should too.

UPSET ALERT
OREGON @ ARIZONA ST
This is a big one! Arizona St has defeated 2 of the 3 ranked teams they’ve played this season. Old Herm just seems to find a way to pull the best out of the boys when the deck is stacked highest against them. The Sun Devils have struggled on defense recently and while you would be correct to say that’s not really the area you want to be weak in against an explosive Oregon offense, State also returns a couple key offensive players from injury this week. That will allow them to use Jayden Daniels at QB, Eno Benjamin at RB, and Brandon Aiyuk at wideout to really balance out their attack. True balance is difficult to defend and leads to dominating the time of possession. If Arizona can limit the possessions for Oregon and just manage to get a few stops along the way, they could win this one in a pseudo-shootout. It’s a night game at the #1 party school in America. The atmosphere will be elite. Can Herm and the boys pull out their biggest one of the year?

The ABG Poll - 11/19/19

11/18/2019

This week’s poll sees a bit of movement after losses by Baylor and Minnesota. Georgia takes a step forward after beating yet another ranked opponent. Ohio State takes the third spot by virtue of receiving a first place vote. Utah and Oregon both climb as the PAC 12 looks to finish strong.

Alabama drops a spot leaving us to think the voters are unsure how the Crimson Tide will finish without Tua Tagovailoa or their typical defense. Bama hosts yet another cupcake, Western Carolina, this Saturday before their Iron Bowl matchup with Auburn.

We have a three-way tie for 10th this week. The voters have pitched in to include someone other than the usual suspects. We’ll see if these teams can hang in there.
1) LSU                49 (4)
2) Clemson         41
3) Ohio State      35 (1)*

Game of the Week
Georgia @ Auburn

This is one of those rivalries that make college football great. “The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” dates back to 1892 to this first game in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park. That game is, according to legend, where Auburn’s “War Eagle” cry first appeared. The first game was the brainchild of Charles Herty and George Petrie, founders of the Dawg and Tiger programs, respectively. The two were college friends and arranged for their two teams to play.

And what a tradition they started. Wally Butts, Shug Jordan, Pat Dye, Vince Dooley, Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson, the list goes on and on. This game is truly one of the hallmarks of life in the Deep South. Will the Tigers roll Toomer’s Corner or will the Dawgs be up late ringing the old Chapel Bell?

These two teams have not only been playing forever, they also have one of the closest rivalries with Georgia holding only a 2 game edge over 123 meetings. It hasn’t been that many years since the series was tied, not only in all time games but also in all time points. The real history of this game is hard nosed, gritty football. Auburn knows to expect Georgia to play “grown man football.” Georgia knows they have to be “man enough to beat Auburn.”

This season Georgia’s stingy defense has allowed exactly 0 rushing touchdowns. Auburn, on the other hand, has scored 23 rushing touchdowns. This is the proverbial irresistible force and immovable object. Something has to give. Saturday afternoon we find out what that’s going to be.

Upset Alert
Texas @ Iowa State

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again now. Iowa State is the best coached team in the nation. Matt Campbell gets more out of the Cyclones than anyone else would. In a hard place to recruit he’s on the verge of bowl eligibility again.

Not taking anything away from Tom Herman but Texas is not completely put together. The Longhorns have all the pieces but the puzzle is incomplete. When they show up in Ames they can expect to be bigger, faster, and stronger than their opponents. But will they be better prepared and when they be in the right mindset to win this game? If they overlook the Cyclones, Matt Campbell will embarrass them.
Coach Drew Burnham

GAME OF THE WEEK
APPALACHAIN STATE @ GEORGIA STATE

Coach is finally off his rocker! He’s picking the battle for Sun Belt East supremacy for his game of the week. Allow me to get you the back story on this one. Once upon a time in the Mountains of North Carolina, an FCS power known as Appalachian State became the most notable David in the history of college football Goliaths by defeating #5 Michigan in Ann Arbor on opening weekend. The game instantly
ascended to folklore and true college football junkies (at least for a small time) knew the names of Armani Edwards and Jerry Moore. They were the talk of the country for weeks and to this day any time a FCS program pulls an early season upset that game is mentioned. On that staff for App State were 2 young coaches named Shawn Elliott, the offensive line coach, and Brad Glenn, the Wide Receivers coach. Fast forward 12 years and those two are back at it together again at Georgia State with Elliott as the Head Coach and Glenn his Offensive coordinator. Just this week Glenn was named to the Broyles award watch list which is given yearly to the top assistant coach in the country. Now, I know a thing or two about the 1st time you get to play against a program that you spent a considerable time in or that had a significant impact on your life. That feeling and that game is strange and awkward no matter how you try to mentally prepare for it. So, while the average fan sees a game for the top of the Sun Belt East, this coach sees the Historical significance in the interworking’s of this game that may go unnoticed by the masses. It will be a big game in Atlanta. Here’s to pulling for the Panthers!

UPSET ALERT

INDIANA @ PENN STATE

“Man coach, 2 weeks in a row?” Yea. Sometimes life’s tough like that. Here’s the psychology of the situation. Penn State was on a magical ride and had their magic carpet snatched out from under them last weekend. Is there a bit of a sobering feeling that occurs with that? Absolutely. However, in many
cases there is also a relaxation that comes with it also as not having a goose egg in the right column. There’s no pressure anymore to defend perfection. Add to that a clash with Ohio State looming and those two combine for a deadly concoction. Indiana is not without fault adding to this situation. They’re on a run that hasn’t been seen in Bloomington in years and the offense is led by rebuild MASTER Kalen Deboer. If you’re not sure who he is, see week 1 C&C. I like this one. Go Hoosiers!

The ABG Poll - 11/12/19

11/12/2019

We’re getting down to the nitty gritty of the season. This past week was forecasted to make some distinctions between teams but it may have stirred up more questions.

We have a new #1 as LSU took down Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Tigers are now in the driver’s seat in the SEC West and current favorites to win the conference.

Alabama drops to a tie for 5th with Georgia. Looking at the ballots, committee members probably disagree most on these two teams.

Bama’s loss either signifies a missed opportunity for a quality win in an otherwise weak schedule or a near miss against the best team in the nation. Voters ranked Bama as high as 2nd and as low as 10th.

Georgia has voters focused either on wins against Notre Dame and Florida or that hideous, jaw dropping loss to South Carolina. Voters ranked the Dawgs as high as 3rd and as low as 9th.

*The Lagniappe Group* - due to the high number of teams finding their way onto ballots this week, we’re offering a little something extra. It’s our version of free football or maybe an extra beignet stuffed in the bag: an 11-15 ranking. This is not a permanent expansion, just a little something extra. Will it happen again? Maybe, maybe not. Don’t fret over the future, just enjoy the treat while it lasts.

Game of the Week
LSU @ Alabama

This is obviously a “Clash of the Titans” matchup. Oddly, this year has a high power Bama offense facing off against LSU’s remarkable defense.

The questions surrounding the status of QB Tua Tagovailoa add to the intrigue. We’ll find out for certain once he takes the field. There’s no doubt in my mind that Tua will be in this game. The question is: how ready is he really?

LSU will be playing without starting LB Michael Divinity who has stepped away from the team for personal reasons. But the Tiger defense has been so strong this year that I expect them to fill the gap.

While there’s a lot of talk about Bama’s offense, no one should underestimate LSU. Joe Burrow has proven he’s not just an athlete, he’s a gutsy field general who leads his team by example. He’s not going to be afraid to stretch into that Bama defense for a first down. I expect a big day from him.

Expect a hard fought, physical football game. This promises to be the best game of the regular season.

Upset Alert

Penn State @ Minnesota

the experts are giving the higher ranked Nittany Lions the edge as they enter the home of the Golden Gophers. Penn State has looked strong all year but they are due for their annual underwhelming game. The Gophers are on a streak ongrr than any they’ve had in decades. They have the potential to beat Penn State even in a good game. If State comes out even a little flat, they’ll have a long day.
Coach Drew Burnham

GAME OF THE WEEK

LSU @ ALABAMA
As a general rule of thumb, I like to let the curator have the no brainer game of the week and I attempt to find one that may not be so obvious as a way to lure you into not missing a quality matchup that you may otherwise ignore. Well, this week, the curator can either join me or kick rocks. They don’t get any better than this! These are the matchups that college football fans live for! There is a rather intense rivalry between these two programs when there AREN’T National Championship implications involved in the matchup. Joe Burrow is one “Heisman moment” away from potentially sealing that thing up. Settling a hush over downtown Tuscaloosa would be a heck of a moment. The Tigers are fielding their best team in years in a form that we’ve never seen them take. They are a team that doesn’t have to rely solely on a juggernaut defense to keep them in games and are more than willing, and capable, to shoot it out with you if need be. For the Tide, The Flying Hawaiian likely, (let’s get real – that sucker’s playing) makes his triumphant return from injury. Bama hasn’t missed a beat without him but they will need all hands on deck for this one. Nick Saban has had nothing but high praises for the Tigers and I’m certain that Coach O shares the same sentiments, although we are still waiting on the press conference transcripts to verify. What a night we are set for! #1 vs #2. President on site. WOW! Laissez les bon temps rouler Tide!

UPSET ALERT
PENN ST. @ MINNESOTA
Row, row, row your boat….PJ Fleck and his all gas no brakes coaching philosophy has brought the Gophers to an undefeated start. They haven’t faced an opponent NEARLY as powerful as they will welcome this week, HOWEVER, I have been a personal victim to that man and I know what he, his staff and his team are capable of. I would love to see Penn State in the playoffs. I think it would be great for college football and Lord knows Nittany nation deserves it after everything they have been through. I am a huge James Franklin fan and I respect everything he stands for as a man and a coach. I am torn here as two of my favorites collide but I just think Funk master Fleck and the boys will power through with home field advantage and find a way. Should be a fun one to watch!

The polling this week is tight with ties at two spots. There are also two match ups this week pitting two ranked opponents against each other. Top ranked Alabama will host second ranked LSU. Fifth ranked Penn State travels to ninth ranked Minnesota. This will have impact on the poll as two ranked teams will pick up their first loss of the season.

Other match ups of note this week include Georgia hosting Missouri and Oklahoma hosting Iowa State. On paper, these should not be close games but history suggests these might be bigger challenges than anticipated.

Game of the Week
World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, Jacksonville

This would be my pick if these two teams were coming in with only one win a piece. The fact that both teams are still playing for playoff spot certainly ups the ante. Both teams need to win. This is the most important game on both teams’ schedule every year. This year, it’s even bigger than usual.

With fans from two states swarming the banks of the St. John’s River, creating a carnival atmosphere, and looking for bragging rights as well as a shot at a national championship, this is the biggest game this week. The winner moves on and the loser starts scrapping for a chance at a New Year’s Day game in Orlando or Tampa.
Coach Drew Burnham

GAME OF THE WEEK

SMU @ MEMPHIS
How can you not be a fan of what is happening in Dallas? 32 years after the death penalty the Pony Express finds itself undefeated and ranked for the first time. Thinking about what the program has been through - the tremendous lows that followed a period of such greatness - since long before any of these players were born and seeing where they are right now, how can you not get emotional? Anyone who has been a consistent reader of this column knows that there are few people in the country who love the Memphis Tigers and the work of Mike Norvell than me. He has done an incredible work there and that is supported by the College Gameday set that is sitting outside the Liberty Bowl today. He has taken the program to new heights and he and his staff deserve an unmentionable amount of praise for that. However, I just cannot consciously pull against SMU here. I can’t not want to see them be successful. Heart over head here 100%, no apologies. Giddy Up!!
