ALABAMA: The same dominating defense as ever. They even look impressive of offense. This one just is not a surprise.
CLEMSON: If there was any doubt that Clemson was still in the very top tier in CFB, they erased that in Blacksburg. The Hokies are a good team. They just were outmatched and outplayed. And that take some doing. Clemson is for real.
TCU: The Horned Frogs are showing the nation the folly of the preseason polls. TCU began the season unranked and then followed the best advice available to unranked teams beginning a season. Just go win.
GEORGIA: I am so glad that my upset alert game went as I suggested it could. The Trojans are out and the Bulldogs are in. As the defense is causing a buzz about the second coming of the "Junkyard Dawgs," the Georgia offense seems to be progressing nicely as well. Their path to Atlanta leads through, well, Atlanta. Should the season progress as it has unfolded so far, the Dawgs will go to Atlanta to face the proverbial monkeys on their backs - an SEC Title and Alabama
OKLAHOMA: When Bob Stoops announced his retirement at the worst possible time, I thought a transition would take a bit. They had a textbook win over Ohio State but I'm still not convinced this is a playoff team. I want to see how they hold up against TCU.
DUKE: I'm still keeping an eye on the Blue Devils. Three of the next four games are going to be tests and Georgia Tech still lies ahead as well. We're going to see how serious of a team the Blue Devils are. UNDER THE RADAR
TEXAS A&M: Kevin Sumlinis in the middle of every hot seat coaching conversation in the nation and The Aggies have seemingly struggled every week, fueling much of the criticism. But the Aggies are also 4-. Winning out would win them the West and a trip to Atlanta.
AUBURN: The Tigers faithful were standing in front of Toomer's with pitchforks and torches after the Mercer game but I don't think anyone has factored in a very close game to a great Clemson team. Since that opener, Auburn has done what it had to do to win. Sometimes that's been ugly and sometimes it has been great. But don't overlook Gus because he's a better coach than he is getting credit for right now.
NC STATE: I gotta mention the Wolfpack right quick. Big win against Florida State and 4 in a row since losing the opener. I think a lot of folks counted them out after the South Carolina game and that was a bit premature.
GAMES TO WATCH:
WEST VIRGINIA @ TCU: TCUis one of my playoff choices right now for a reason. The Frogs showed me they were serious against OSU. The Mounties dropped their opener in a close one to a very goof Virginia Tech team. Then WVU won the next three by a total of 171-70. I'm looking for this one to be good.
MICHIGAN ST @ MICHIGAN: Sometimes there doesn't have to be national or even conference implications for a game to matter. While this game could have both, a rivalry game changes the rules and that could matter a lot for a Michigan team that may not be living up to the hype. Look for this game to be better and closer than expected.
UPSET ALERT OF THE WEEK
LOUISVILLE @ NC STATE: Louisville is getting a lot of press but looking at the schedule, it's not that impressive. Wins over a mid-major, a FCS team, and a struggling North Carolina team, a game they should have lost to Purdue and a loss to Clemson. They are ripe for an upset and NC State is just the team to do it.
Coach Drew Burnham
ALABAMA – New week, same story. I’m thinking that next week, I’ll leave them off my playoff teams just to see if anyone actually reads the Alabama section or just skips it and moves on.
CLEMSON – Wow. Just wow. To go into Blacksburg, VA at night and do what they did is one of the more impressive things you’ll see in college football this year. Makes one lean towards a 3rd straight appearance in the big game. I’m not certain the other 2 playoff spots even matter.
WASHINGTON- Fresh off their playoff appearance a year ago, the Huskies are 5-0 and are winning by an average of more than 33 points per game. Put some respect on their name when you say it. They deserve it.
GEORGIA- Glory Glory! How can I put this lightly? The last 2 weeks the Dawgs have done just about whatever they wanted. Regardless of the opponent, 30-40 point SEC wins are impressive. Should they win out, much weight will be put on how they look in the championship game and what is happening in the Big 10, but the Dawgs have as good a shot as anyone.
NC STATE – I must admit that I wrote off the FSU win as a fluke and moved on. However, there was no hangover this week and the Wolf Pack produced again. They have a huge one Thursday night this week with Lamar Jackson and the Cardinals. Keep your eyes on them.
WISCONSIN- Quietly, the Badgers are 4-0 and #9 in the country. No one talks about them as a playoff contender, but acknowledges that they’re a good team. I’m not surprised that they are doing well, I’m surprised at their ability to hide in plain sight.
UNDER THE RADAR
Washington State emphatically removed themselves from this list Saturday night. For the record, however, Mike Leach still doesn’t care.
NEBRASKA – After a shaky start, the Huskers are 2-0 in conference play and sit atop the Big 10 West. Losing 2 tough games can get you written off in a hurry but don’t give up on these guys just yet. They have a lot of ball left to play and they are playing it well the last couple weeks.
NOTRE DAME – The Irish lost by one point to an extremely impressive UGA team and it was like their season ended. All conversation about them ended. They’re still averaging over 40 points per game. They’re still running the football extremely well. Depending on what happens with the rest of the world over the next 2 months or so, The Irish still have a shot to contend for a spot.
GAMES TO WATCH
LOUISVILLE @ NC STATE – Thursday night should be quite the spectacle. The Heisman Trophy winner and his team roll into Raleigh to face an NC State team who is as hot as anyone in the country right now. What a great way to start the football week! Be sure to catch this one.
MIAMI @ FLORIDA STATE – For the Noles, this one is huge. Miami is a very talented bunch and a slip this week would make for an uphill climb the rest of the way with 3 ranked opponents left on the schedule. Miami is just getting comfortable and FSU is in fight or flight mode. It will be a very interesting matchup.
UPSET ALERT OF THE WEEK
23 VEST VIRGINIA @ 8 TCU - The only Saturday top 25 game of the week should be filled with Offensive Eruptions. I think the Mountaineers get some stops and win Saturday in a shootout. Put your seatbelt on for this one!
